On Sunday, we hosted a vegetable and flower seed-sowing event for the second year of our gardening club. Due to a double booking at our venue, one of our wonderful volunteers, Alison, kindly stepped in to host the session in her beautiful garden.
The event was organised and led by Simone, our fantastic and knowledgeable gardening volunteer facilitator. There were ten lovely participants - a mix of regular volunteers, some new faces, and a range of ages.
The session was engaging and enjoyable. We sowed seeds using the spiral seed snail method, a zero-waste, space-saving technique, as well as traditional sowing methods. We also compared different composts and soils, seeds, and gardening experiences. A variety of vegetables and flowers were sown, including Tigerella tomatoes, Gardener’s Delight plum tomatoes, green and yellow courgettes, runner beans, French beans, rainbow chard, beetroot, Nigella (Love-in-a-Mist), and sunflowers.
We’re now patiently waiting for our seeds to germinate on our windowsills. Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing photos and updates on our WhatsApp gardening club group, separating and potting on the seedlings until they are strong and large enough to be planted in participants’ outdoor spaces and in JVS’s garden as part of our shared food-growing space.
A big thank you to Alison for hosting and for preparing a delicious fruit platter. We are very grateful to Simone for her dedication and passion in preparing and delivering the session, as well as for providing ongoing aftercare advice on how to nurture our seedlings.
