A recent study published in Frontiers in Nutrition has found that a low-fat vegan diet is more effective for weight loss than a Mediterranean diet, particularly among overweight adults.
The 16-week randomized trial involved 62 overweight participants, who were assigned either a low-fat vegan diet or a Mediterranean diet. Results showed that those on the vegan diet lost an average of six kilograms, while those on the Mediterranean diet experienced no significant weight change.
One proposed explanation for this difference lies in the alkalising effect of plant-based foods. Fruits, vegetables, and legumes are more alkaline compared to animal-based products like meat and cheese. Alkaline diets have been associated not only with weight loss, but also with improved insulin sensitivity and lower blood pressure. In contrast, diets high in acid-forming foods can increase inflammation, disrupt metabolism, and contribute to weight gain.
The study highlights that replacing animal products with plant-based options can be a powerful strategy—not just for weight loss but also for reducing the risk of chronic diseases.
According to the director of Clinical Research at the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine:
“Replacing animal products with alkaline plant-based foods like leafy greens, berries, and legumes can help promote weight loss in people with type 1 diabetes.”
