APPG on Vegetarianism & Veganism: Is food security an issue for vegetarians and vegans?

The World Food Summit of 1996 defined food security as existing "when all people at all times have access to sufficient, safe, nutritious food to maintain a healthy and active life". During the COVID-19 pandemic, issues around access to food have become more widespread, including government-provided food parcels that did not cater for specific dietary needs.

The number of people needing to use food banks has also increased dramatically – calling into question food banks' standard supplies of vegan food, and prompting vegan and vegetarian groups to become more actively involved in supporting people in the community.

But what can we learn from these projects? And even without a pandemic, is food security an issue for older or institutionalised vegetarians and vegans, or those who depend on services?

The event will be chaired by Christina Rees MP and we'll be joined by our panel of speakers:

  • Nathaniel Harper, Worthing Vegan Food Bank
  • Jen Elford, The Vegetarian Society
  • Yasmine El-Gabry, V for Life
