The livestock sector is a major emitter of greenhouse gasses, contributing at least 14.5% of all global GHG emissions. This recently led Chatham House to warn that it is unlikely that global temperature rises can be kept below two degrees Celsius in the absence of a radical shift in meat and dairy consumption.

The discussion will centre around the links between meat and dairy consumption and climate change, pathways to lower consumption, and mitigation potential from encouraging a shift towards growing more plant proteins domestically, as well as other policy recommendations.

Speakers:

• Griffin Carpenter, Senior Researcher, New Economic Foundation, discussing the findings of their new report Grow Green: Solutions for the Farm of the Future. The health, environmental, and ethical case for a shift in diet from animal to protein diets has been well documented, but many reports stop short of explaining why this transition has failed to take place and what policies could spark that change. The report tackles the question of ‘how’ by analysing the barriers to producing protein crops in the UK, and proposing policies to overcome them.
• Antony Froggatt, Senior Research Fellow (Energy, Environment and Resources), Chatham House, author of Changing Climate – Changing Diets, will talk about how reducing global meat consumption is critical to keeping global warming below the 'danger level' of two degrees Celsius, the main goal of the climate negotiations in Paris.
• Helen Harwatt, Sustainability Research Specialist, author of Substituting beans for beef as a contribution toward climate change targets will look at what impact we could have on greenhouse gas emissions by switching from eating beef to beans.
