The brutal murder of George Floyd has sent ripples throughout the world as those who support an end to the systematic killing of people of colour take to the streets, and raise their voices in solidarity with the black lives matter movement.
We stand explicitly for a more compassionate world. Our promotion of veganism has always been about creating a world that is kind to all living beings. In the words of black animal rights activist Zachary Toliver: “Those of us who are active in the animal rights movement have a reason for being powerful allies [to Black Lives Matter]. If we truly believe in empathy and compassion for all living beings, we can show it today… Just as we know it’s indefensible to use and abuse animals, the killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery and the near countless other Black lives taken because of violent bigotry are completely unjustifiable.”
All of us are created b’tzelem Elohim, in the image of the Divine. We stand with the Black Lives Matter movement, and we call for a more just world for all of our siblings on this Earth.
As with other community organisations, we are discussing internally how we can ensure that JVS is a space that is inclusive to black people and people of colour, both in the Jewish community and in the wider community. We’d welcome thoughts and comments from BAME people who have either interacted with us or would like to in the future.
